What It Really Means to Serve the Lord As a Mom – Faith Reflection

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” — Joshua 24:15

I keep coming back to this verse.

Not because it is easy to live out — but because it is honest about what it actually requires. Anytime I read this verse, it stands out to me that Joshua did not say “I will serve the Lord and hope my house follows along eventually.” He drew a line and made a decision that would shape the entire culture of his home, starting with himself.

As moms, that is exactly the position we are in every single day — whether we feel ready for it or not.

Your House Is Being Shaped Right Now

Long before our children can read a Bible verse or sit through a sermon, they are reading us. They are watching how we respond when we are overwhelmed. They are absorbing whether our home feels like a place of grace or a place of pressure. They are learning what it means to serve the Lord by watching what it looks like in our actual living rooms, kitchens, and bedtime routines — not in a perfect version of motherhood, but in the real one.

That is both a beautiful weight and a deeply freeing truth. You do not need a perfectly run household to fulfill this verse. You need a heart that has decided — like Joshua’s — that this home, with all its mess and noise and unfinished laundry, belongs to the Lord.

What This Looks Like in the Ordinary Moments

Serving the Lord with your house does not usually look dramatic. Most days it looks like:

  • Choosing patience in the fourth time you have been called back into the bedroom at bedtime
  • Praying over a sick child in the middle of the night instead of just powering through on autopilot
  • Letting your toddler see you say “I’m sorry” when you lose your temper
  • Filling your home with worship music during the chaos of getting everyone out the door
  • Whispering one more grateful prayer before your head hits the pillow, even on the hardest days

None of that requires a perfectly decorated home or a flawless routine. It requires a decision — made and remade daily — about whose home this really is.

A Prayer For Your House Today

Lord, this home is Yours. On the easy days and the hard ones, in the laughter and in the tears, let my house be a place that points back to You. Help me lead with grace the way You lead me. Amen.

If this verse has been on your heart too, I would love to hear how you are living it out in your own home this season. And if you have not yet, check out my free resources — because part of stewarding our homes well is being prepared and equipped for the seasons ahead too.
