Trust in the Lord With All Your Heart — Even When Motherhood Doesn’t Make Sense

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.“ — Proverbs 3:5-6

I think every mom reaches a moment — usually somewhere around 2am with a crying baby, or in the middle of a toddler tantrum in a parking lot, or staring at a stack of bills wondering how this is all going to work out — where she realizes just how little she actually understands about what she is doing.

And that is exactly where this verse meets us.

Motherhood Will Outpace Your Understanding

Nobody fully understands motherhood before they are in it. You can read every book (and I read quite a few), watch every video, ask every question — and you will still find yourself in moments where you simply do not know what to do next. At least, I’ve found myself in those moments more often than I’d like to admit.

That is not a failure on your part. That is the whole point of this verse.

“Lean not on your own understanding” is not God asking us to stop thinking, planning, or learning. It is Him reminding us that our understanding was never meant to be the foundation we stand on in the first place. Our understanding is limited, finite, and constantly catching up. His is not.

The mamas who seem most at peace aren’t necessarily the ones who have it all figured out. Sometimes, they’re the ones learning to trust God even when they don’t.

What “Leaning Not on Your Own Understanding” Actually Looks Like

In real, everyday motherhood, this verse shows up as:

  • Praying over a decision you cannot research your way into clarity on — which pediatrician, which school, which next step
  • Releasing the guilt of not knowing if you are “doing it right” and trusting that showing up with love covers far more ground than perfect knowledge ever could
  • Letting go of comparison to other moms whose paths look different from yours, trusting that God is making YOUR path straight
  • Resting at night even when tomorrow is uncertain, because trust is a posture you can choose even without answers

A Prayer For the Mom Who Doesn’t Have It Figured Out

Lord, I don’t fully understand this season, and I’m tired of pretending I do. Help me trust You with the parts of motherhood that don’t make sense yet. Straighten my path even when I can’t see where it’s going. Amen.

If motherhood feels like more questions than answers right now, you are not alone. God’s Word offers wisdom and comfort even in the seasons we don’t fully understand.
