“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” — John 14:27
There is a kind of peace the world tries to sell us — the peace of a perfectly clean house, a baby who sleeps through the night, a to-do list with nothing left undone. And if that is the peace we are chasing, motherhood will disappoint us almost every single day.
But that is not the peace Jesus is talking about here.
A Peace That Doesn’t Wait for Calm Circumstances 🤍
Notice what Jesus says right before this promise — He is preparing His disciples for His own death, for confusion, for a season that will feel anything but peaceful by the world’s definition. And in the middle of that He says “my peace I give you.”
This is peace that exists underneath the chaos, not instead of it. It is not the absence of a crying baby, a messy kitchen, or a hard day. It is a steady, settled assurance that holds even while the noise continues around you.
That distinction matters so much for us as moms, because if we are waiting for circumstances to calm down before we feel peace, we may be waiting a very long time.
What This Looks Like on a Loud, Hard Day 🏡
- Taking a breath and silently praying “Your peace, not the world’s” in the middle of a toddler meltdown
- Letting the laundry sit unfolded while you choose presence with your child instead
- Trusting that an imperfect, noisy home can still be a peaceful one, because peace was never about silence
- Reminding yourself that “do not let your hearts be troubled” is a command you can return to again and again, not a one-time fix
A Prayer For the Noisy, Beautiful Chaos 🙏
Lord, my circumstances are loud today, but I am asking for Your peace underneath all of it. Settle my heart even when the day does not settle down. Amen.
If today feels anything but peaceful, you are not failing to access something everyone else has figured out. You are simply being invited, again, to receive a peace that was never meant to depend on a quiet house. 🤍
